AI Fabric Spine-Leaf Calculator

Turn GPU server connectivity into a reviewable leaf, spine, pod and media plan. The calculator keeps physical cages separate from logical breakout ports and labels future or silicon-only platforms as planning references.

4. Resilience and BOM

Sizing result

How the sizing works

Endpoint links are placed either in pooled leaf capacity or isolated GPU rails. The solver enumerates whole physical-cage splits, rejects splits above the oversubscription target, then checks spine radix, a two-tier pod ceiling and one-spine failure capacity.

oversubscription = (D × endpoint rate) ÷ (U × uplink rate)

Planning boundary

This is an architecture and quantity estimate, not an orderable bill of materials. Breakout support, optics, cable reach, firmware, power, cooling, rail mapping and exact SKU availability still require vendor qualification.

Platform evidence

Port profiles and availability labels come from the linked vendor sources. Capacity is normalized to line rate in one direction so full-duplex marketing totals are not accidentally doubled.

Inputs

  • GPU servers, GPUs per server, and NIC count per GPU or per server
  • NIC rate, one or two planes, pooled or rail attachment, and target oversubscription
  • Leaf and spine platforms, uplink rate, reserved cages, redundancy policy, media and spares

Outputs

  • Leaf/spine counts per plane, two-tier pod ceiling, port split and utilization
  • Normal and single-spine-failure oversubscription plus explicit infeasibility reasons
  • Logical links, cage terminations, switch spares, rack units and power when known

Use Cases

  • Comparing 400G, 800G and 1.6T fixed-switch Clos designs
  • Checking rail-optimized GPU fabrics before vendor design review
  • Creating a traceable first-pass RoCE or InfiniBand quantity estimate

Data Sources

  • Broadcom Tomahawk 5 and Tomahawk 6 official announcements
  • Juniper QFX5240 and QFX5250 official hardware documentation
  • Arista 7060X6 and 7060XE7 official specifications
  • Cisco Nexus 9364E and 9164E official data sheets
  • Ruijie RG-S6990 official product pages
  • NVIDIA Spectrum and Quantum official product documentation

Limitations

  • Planning estimate, not an orderable BOM; optics, breakout, reach, firmware and SKU availability require vendor qualification
  • Does not model traffic locality, incast, adaptive routing, cabling length or modular chassis line cards
